AVI3M – Visual Arts

This course enables students to further develop their knowledge and skills in visual arts. Students will use the creative process to explore a wide range of themes through drawing, painting, sculpting, and mixed media. They will use the critical analysis process to reflect on and interpret art within personal, contemporary, historical, and cultural contexts. Students will also explore how to use the elements and principles of design to create meaningful artworks and will develop their skills in presenting and promoting their art.

Overall Curriculum Expectations

A. Creating and Presenting

By the end of this course, students will:

  1. Apply the creative process to produce a variety of artworks in traditional and contemporary media.

  2. Use elements and principles of design to communicate ideas and emotions in their artwork.

  3. Apply technical skills and explore a range of materials, tools, and techniques.

  4. Demonstrate the ability to present and promote their art for a specific purpose and audience.

B. Reflecting, Responding, and Analyzing

By the end of this course, students will:

  1. Apply the critical analysis process to interpret and evaluate their own art and the work of others.

  2. Demonstrate an understanding of how art reflects and influences society, culture, and identity.

  3. Reflect on their art practice to develop personal and artistic growth.

  4. Identify and describe ethical and legal considerations related to art and visual culture.

C. Exploring Forms and Cultural Contexts

By the end of this course, students will:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of various historical and contemporary art forms and their cultural significance.

  2. Analyze the function of art in diverse cultures, communities, and time periods.

  3. Create artworks that explore themes relevant to personal, social, or cultural issues.

  4. Demonstrate an understanding of connections between visual arts and other disciplines.
