Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OLC4O): Mastering Essential Reading and Writing Skills
Meet the Provincial Literacy Requirement and Build Cross-Curricular Communication Proficiency

The OLC4O – Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course is designed to help students acquire and demonstrate the reading and writing skills required to meet the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Requirement for graduation. This course is especially beneficial for students who have attempted the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) and require further development in literacy.
Students in this course will engage with a variety of informational, narrative, and graphic texts, and develop their writing skills through the creation of summaries, opinion pieces, personal reflections, information paragraphs, and news reports. By maintaining a literacy portfolio, students track their progress and reflect on their reading and writing experiences throughout the course.
To enroll, students must have been eligible to write the OSSLT at least twice and been unsuccessful at least once.
Key Learning Areas in OLC4O
- Building Reading Skills: Develop the ability to read, comprehend, and analyze a wide range of texts. Students will learn to apply strategies to understand vocabulary, identify main ideas, and interpret textual features.
- Building Writing Skills: Improve writing through the full process—from brainstorming and drafting to revising and finalizing. Students will practice writing in multiple forms and for varied audiences and purposes.
- Understanding and Assessing Growth in Literacy: Reflect on the role of literacy in daily life, assess personal learning progress, and build confidence in communication skills applicable across all subject areas and life situations.
The course is divided into five instructional units with a final exam, totaling 110 hours. Students will explore reading and writing tasks tied to real-world and academic contexts, fostering improved communication and critical thinking.
