The HSC4M – World Cultures course explores the complex nature of culture and identity, offering students a rich understanding of how cultures are formed, preserved, transformed, and expressed. Students will analyze a range of world cultures through the lens of religion, art, philosophy, and social issues, gaining insight into global diversity and cultural influence. The course also emphasizes research, critical inquiry, and social action, preparing students to be thoughtful and engaged global citizens.

This course is particularly valuable for students pursuing post-secondary programs in social sciences, humanities, global studies, anthropology, or sociology.

To enroll in this course, students must have completed any university (U) or university/college (M) preparation course in Social Sciences and Humanities, English, or Canadian and World Studies.

Key Learning Areas in HSC4M

  • Research and Inquiry Skills: Learn how to develop research questions, collect and analyze data, and communicate findings clearly. Apply academic inquiry methods to understand cultural diversity.
  • The Concept of Culture: Explore what defines culture and how cultural identities are shaped, maintained, and changed. Apply social science theories to analyze cultural phenomena.
  • Cultural Expressions: Study global philosophies, religious beliefs, and artistic expressions to understand their significance and influence. Examine how these forms evolve over time and shape societal norms.
  • Critical Cultural Issues: Analyze power dynamics within and between cultures, and the challenges faced by minority and ethnocultural groups.
  • Culture as Social Action: Design and implement a real-world social action project promoting cultural understanding or addressing a cultural issue.

The course is organized into four major units, each focused on understanding and applying cultural theory and practice, supported by a culminating social action project. Across 110 instructional hours, students will build skills in research, critical thinking, and community engagement through discussions, presentations, and project-based learning.
