The MDM4U – Mathematics of Data Management course broadens students’ understanding of mathematics by applying it to data organization, probability, and statistical analysis. Students will learn methods to efficiently organize and analyze large sets of data, solve complex probability problems, and complete a culminating investigation integrating statistical concepts and skills.

This course is particularly beneficial for students planning to pursue university studies in business, social sciences, and the humanities, where data analysis and statistical interpretation play a significant role. By mastering counting principles, probability distributions, statistical organization, and real-world data applications, students will develop essential problem-solving skills required for higher education and professional fields.

Key Learning Areas in MDM4U

  • Counting and Probability: Solve problems involving probability, permutations, and combinations in discrete sample spaces.

  • Probability Distributions: Explore discrete and continuous probability distributions, determine expected values, and analyze the properties of the normal distribution.

  • Data Organization for Analysis: Understand data variability, sampling techniques, and primary data collection methods to solve real-world problems.

  • Statistical Analysis: Interpret and analyze one-variable and two-variable data using numerical, graphical, and algebraic techniques.

  • Culminating Data Management Investigation: Conduct a comprehensive statistical study that integrates and applies key concepts learned throughout the course.

The course is structured into nine units, covering probability, data organization, and statistical applications, culminating in a final examination and independent investigation. Over 110 hours, students will engage in problem-solving exercises, real-world data applications, and analytical reasoning to enhance their mathematical proficiency.
