Grade 11 Functions (MCR3U): Building the Foundation for Advanced Mathematics
Explore Algebra, Exponential and Trigonometric Functions for University Success

The MCR3U – Grade 11 Functions course introduces students to the formal concept of a function and builds a strong foundation for advanced mathematical studies. Students expand on their knowledge of linear and quadratic relationships, explore trigonometric and exponential functions, and develop essential skills in problem-solving, algebraic manipulation, and mathematical reasoning.
This university preparation course is ideal for students who plan to pursue Grade 12 Advanced Functions (MHF4U), Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U), or university programs in mathematics, science, engineering, or economics.
To enroll in this course, students must have successfully completed MPM2D – Grade 10 Principles of Mathematics.
Key Learning Areas in MCR3U
- Characteristics of Functions: Understand the nature of functions, their representations, and their inverses. Solve problems involving quadratic functions, and simplify polynomial, radical, and rational expressions.
- Exponential Functions: Learn the laws of exponents, simplify and evaluate exponential expressions, and solve real-world problems using exponential models.
- Discrete Functions: Explore arithmetic and geometric sequences and series. Connect these concepts to real-life scenarios like compound interest and annuities.
- Trigonometric Functions: Use trigonometric ratios, sine and cosine laws, and graph sinusoidal functions. Understand and apply trigonometric identities to solve practical problems.
- Transformations of Functions: Analyze how functions change through reflection, translation, and scaling. Link algebraic transformations to graphical shifts.
- Financial Applications: Apply mathematical models to solve problems involving finance, including compound interest and annuities.
The course is divided into seven instructional units with a final examination, totaling 110 hours. Learning is supported by graphing tools, algebraic modeling, and real-life applications, helping students connect abstract mathematical concepts to practical use.
