Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U): Preparing for University-Level Mathematics
Strengthen Your Mathematical and Analytical Skills with MCV4U

The MCV4U – Calculus and Vectors course builds on students’ previous experience with functions and deepens their understanding of rates of change. This Grade 12 course equips students with the skills necessary to solve problems involving geometric and algebraic representations of vectors, as well as lines and planes in three-dimensional space. Additionally, students broaden their knowledge of rates of change by exploring derivatives of polynomial, sinusoidal, exponential, rational, and radical functions. These concepts are applied to real-world scenarios, allowing students to model relationships mathematically and refine problem-solving techniques.
This course is designed for students who plan to pursue careers in science, engineering, economics, and business, especially those who will be required to take university-level calculus, linear algebra, or physics courses. By the end of MCV4U, students will have mastered essential mathematical processes needed for success in advanced studies.
Key Learning Areas in MCV4U
-
Derivatives and Rates of Change: Understand the concept of derivatives and apply them to solve real-world problems involving motion, optimization, and other applications.
-
Vectors and Geometry in Three-Dimensional Space: Learn about vector properties, equations of lines and planes, and how they are used to model physical and geometric problems.
-
Exponential and Logarithmic Functions: Explore the relationship between exponential and logarithmic expressions and apply logarithmic laws to simplify numeric expressions.
-
Trigonometric Functions and Identities: Work with trigonometric equations, prove identities, and make connections between different representations of trigonometric functions.
The course is structured into eight units covering a variety of advanced mathematical topics, culminating in a final exam. Over 110 hours, students will engage in interactive lessons, problem-solving exercises, and practical applications of calculus and vectors.
