The SCH3U – Grade 11 Chemistry course offers students a comprehensive introduction to the principles of chemistry and its real-world applications. Designed for university-bound learners, this course explores key topics such as chemical bonding, reactions, solutions, and atmospheric chemistry. With a strong emphasis on scientific investigation, students will develop both theoretical understanding and hands-on skills through labs, research projects, and problem-solving exercises.

Whether students are preparing for careers in science, engineering, health care, or environmental studies, this course lays the groundwork for success by combining critical thinking, quantitative analysis, and laboratory techniques.

To enroll in this course, students must have completed SNC2D (Grade 10 Academic Science).

Key Learning Areas in SCH3U

  • Scientific Investigation Skills & Career Exploration: Develop essential skills for scientific inquiry, understand how to collect and interpret data, and explore career paths in chemistry and science-related fields.
  • Matter, Chemical Trends, and Bonding: Study periodic trends, the structure of the periodic table, and the nature of chemical bonds, while exploring how substances interact and affect the environment.
  • Chemical Reactions: Learn about various types of chemical reactions, investigate them through hands-on labs, and evaluate their applications in everyday life and industrial processes.
  • Quantities in Chemical Reactions: Master stoichiometry, the mole concept, and quantitative analysis used in chemical equations and laboratory calculations.
  • Solutions and Solubility: Examine the behavior of solutions, calculate concentrations, and analyze water-related environmental issues.
  • Gases and Atmospheric Chemistry: Understand the behavior of gases through gas laws and explore the impact of human activity on air quality and the atmosphere.

This course includes five structured units and a final proctored examination, totaling 110 instructional hours. Students will participate in labs, simulations, collaborative discussions, and research-based tasks that enhance understanding and prepare them for advanced science courses.
