The SBI4U – Biology course offers students an in-depth exploration of the complex systems and processes that define living organisms. From biochemistry and metabolic functions to molecular genetics, homeostasis, and population dynamics, this course encourages analytical thinking and hands-on investigation. Students gain both theoretical and practical understanding of biology while refining the research and communication skills essential for further studies in the life sciences.

This course is especially valuable for students pursuing university programs in medicine, biotechnology, genetics, environmental science, and related fields. Through engaging lessons and investigations, students develop the scientific literacy and problem-solving skills needed to tackle real-world challenges in health, ecology, and biological research.

Key Learning Areas in SBI4U

  • Scientific Investigation Skills and Careers: Develop advanced inquiry skills and explore diverse careers in biological sciences, including contributions from Canadian scientists.
  • Biochemistry: Study the roles of enzymes, biological molecules, and cellular biochemical reactions, with a focus on their applications in medicine and industry.
  • Metabolic Processes: Investigate cellular respiration and photosynthesis, and understand how chemical energy powers biological systems.
  • Molecular Genetics: Examine the structure and function of DNA and cellular components, and explore how biotechnology is used in agriculture and health sciences.
  • Homeostasis: Understand the feedback mechanisms that regulate body systems and evaluate the effects of environmental factors on human health.
  • Population Dynamics: Analyze population trends, ecological footprints, and the effectiveness of Canadian initiatives to support sustainable ecosystems.

This course is organized into five comprehensive units, totaling 110 hours, and concludes with a proctored final examination worth 30% of the final grade. Students will participate in lab-based investigations, theoretical learning, and data analysis to build a solid foundation in modern biology.
